The long-awaited night is finally here. For the first time, we’ll be to actually call this the January 5 Dome Show! Silly as that sounds, this is serious stuff here, a monumental and historic night for pro wrestling. Wrestle Kingdom 14 is one double the scope of everything that has come before it, a full weekend of wrestling greatness. And now we’re here on Night 2, where things are heating up more than ever before.
I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer, and it’s a good thing my sleep schedule was already a great big mess by the end of last year! Otherwise I’d never be able to stick with you for the entirety of these shows! It’s a great trade-off, if you ask me. I’ll be previewing the action for tonight, just as I did for Night 1, so let’s get to it!
RevPro British Heavyweight Championship: Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Sanada
This is something of a sleeper bout for me, not one that a lot of folks are talking about but I have a pretty good feeling about it. I do love me some technical mat mastery, and these two are a fine pair to get that going.
Zack Sabre Jr. is not only one of New Japan’s most skilled competitors, but remains Britain’s biggest homegrown star, and to this day has still remained there. Thus, even now, he is effectively the ace of RevPro, atleast judging by how frequently he holds their world title. And ever since 2016, he’s entered into a pattern of losing this title to New Japan stars only to eventually win them back. He has done this with Katsuyori Shibata, Tomohiro Ishii and most recently Hiroshi Tanahashi.
Sanada has been looking for a singles title to call his own for some time. While this wouldn’t be seen as quite the same as claiming the Intercontinental or Openweight titles, it’s atleast something. The title has slowly become more and more relevant to New Japan with time, this being the second year in a row it was defended at Wrestle Kingdom.
This one’s up in the air for me, but I’m gonna say Sanada takes it. These shows always have a ton of title changes and I think adding to that is part of why the British Heavyweight title is even defended in New Japan in the first place.
