Many have weighed in on the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap from the 2022 Academy Awards, now Chris Rock’s mother weighs in!
Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock’s MOM – At Least She Thinks So
The slap came prior to Will Smith accepting the Academy Award for Best Actor thanks to his role in 2021’s King Richard. After making a G.I. Jane joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith—who has shaved her head while dealing with alopecia—Will Smith sauntered up to the stage to Rock and paint-brushed him before returning to his seat.
He then went on to warn Chris Rock to:
“Keep my wife’s name out of your f***king mouth!”
If you blinked, you probably missed but Rock would confirm to the audience that he had been slapped by Will Smith. It was the most shocking moment from a pretty routine Academy Awards show.
In speaking with WIS News, Rock’s mother Rose said touched on the moment saying:
“You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened.”
If you look at the video after the joke was made, Smith was laughing initially. She admitted that she believed the slap was staged. It hit home that Rock was actually slapped once Smith began cursing at Rock.
Rose said that when the Academy Award-winner slapped Chris Rock, “he slapped all of us. He really slapped me.” She also feels that the incident eclipsed his Award speech.
About Rock’s reaction, she said that she is proud of her son. In contrast to how Smith has been the ire of award’s season, his reaction to the slap has been applauded by many.
Some on social media feel that if Rock struck Smith back, Rock would’ve been viewed unfavorably. After all, Rock was a host and presenter, he’s representing the ceremony of the Academy Awards.
Also, he’s representing his family and when slapped her, she says she felted it.
Will Smith Spotted in India During Period of “Deep Healing”
The Academy would later come to the decision to ban Will Smith from the Oscars for ten years. Smith said that he accepted and respected the Academy’s decision, and Chris Rock’s mother agreed with not stripping him of the award. She also feels that Smith should reach out to Rock and apologize.
On the Smiths’ side of things, there have been few updates. In a title card statement before the Wednesday, April 20 Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith said that the family would be “focusing on deep healing.” Meanwhile, photos obtained by Page Six show Will Smith was seen in Mumbai taking pictures with fans.

People tuned in for answers and insight but Jada promoted a future episode of the Red Table Talk saying that “Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared at the table when the time calls.”
