AEW has been hitting a few snags lately and it’s apparent their honeymoon period is over with many, but the latest rumors have more to do with their internal structure and chaos resulting from the lack thereof.
The current rumors going around are that the talent are pulling their hair out behind the scenes, and it makes sense that the company would be struggling putting things together at the moment.
AEW Talent Reportedly Upset at Backstage Chaos and Lack of Structure
When AEW first started, it was reported that Cody Rhodes was running the singles division, Brandi Rhodes the women’s division, and the Young Bucks the tag team division.
It can be argued that’s why Cody booked himself never to wrestler for the AEW Championship, hence avoiding booking himself as champion like Dusty Rhodes was infamous for in the NWA.
There was a balance and structure to the fledgling company, but things have changed a lot.
Becoming too bloated
Since the start of the pandemic, the WWE has given wrestling new life by releasing their stranglehold on talent and cutting loose roughly 80 or more wrestlers over a two year period for budget reasons.
While it put those wrestlers’ livelihoods at risk while the company made record profits thanks to streaming deals, it allowed others like Impact Wrestling and AEW to acquire more talent to enhance their product.
It didn’t take long for AEW’s roster to become bloated like WWE’s had been, and we’ve seen many stars disappear off TV all together or just appear on Dark instead.
It’s a difficult line to walk when so much talent is available, and it’s led to where we’re at now.
Changes in power structure
While the Executive Vice Presidents ran their selective divisions previously, it was reported last year that Tony Kahn took those responsibilities away and is AEW’s creative now.
While he listens to everyone’s ideas, it can’t be easy having so many voices in his ear and it would make sense that he didn’t have time to set up a new internal structure or didn’t expect AEW to become so big so fast.
We don’t doubt he’ll work it out and put a new structure in place to deal with the creative aspects, or he may even delegate the power back to the Young Bucks and others.
He’d still be able to have the final say over creative, but it’d be funneled through others. Of course, he may already be doing that and the rumors are just that.
