In crime from across the pond, a burglar in Durham County, UK was arrested after he attempted to gouge a police officer’s eyes out. Shaun Watkins was being questioned about a house robbery in April 2022 and did not take it well.
UK House Burglar Sentenced to 18 Months After Trying to Gouge a Police Officer’s Eyes Out
32-year-old Shaun Watkins was being questioned about an incident in Peterlee, a small town in northeast Durham County. It seems that Watkins was using the restroom at some point and was aware of the police presence.
The report from the Durham Constabulary doesn’t really have a clear explanation of where this occurred but the police gave Watkins time to finish up before arresting him. When the door opened, the officer was attacked by the burglar who landed a couple of punches and attempted to gouge the cop’s eyes.
A well-aimed shot of pepper spray allowed the officer to escape and arrest Watkins but not before he got a headbutt from the rowdy robbery. Shaun Watkins would plead guilty to assault by beating, criminal damage, and assault causing actual bodily harm. The burglar-turned-brawler would receive an 18-month sentence by the Durham Crown Court on Friday, May 6, 2022. Detective Inspector Darren Wild of the Peterlee CID would say of the 32-year-old offender:
“Watkins is a particularly nasty criminal who uses any means possible to try to escape justice. Thankfully the officer in this case used his training to contain Watkins despite being temporarily blinded. No officer should ever be attacked let alone in such a violent way and we are glad to see Watkins behind bars where he can cannot harm anyone else for the foreseeable.”
