We are not strangers to the fact that Elon Musk dreams of sending people to Mars. Furthermore, he dreams about populating Mars and transforming it into a backup planet of ours. The billionaire claims that the possibility of starting the process lies within several years from now. However, scientists worldwide are surprised by his ‘boldness’ and label this as the stupidest idea ever.
Elon hints to the world, that in the following 5 to 10 years he sees SpaceX sending people to Mars. But, when he says that he thinks the conservation of the Earth lies in our dispatching away from the planet he receives numerous replies and mocking exactly from conservation scientists.
Elon Musk Ridiculed By Scientist Over ‘The Stupidest Idea Ever’
In a recent tweet, the billionaire states that in order to protect the Earth from ‘calamity’ we need to flee it as soon as possible.
“Making life multi-planetary expands the scope & scale of consciousness. It also enables us to back up the biosphere. Protecting all life as we know it from a calamity on Earth. Humanity is life’s steward, as no other species can transport life to Mars. We can’t let them down.”
The first to reply to this and express how ridiculous this sounds, is the researcher and climate change activist Dr. Charlie Gardner. Dr Garner is also a writer of the books The Guardian and The Ecologist, with a domain exactly in the conservation sphere.
“In my 25-year career as a conservation scientist, I have never once heard anyone suggest ‘back up the biosphere by transporting it all to Mars’ as a strategy to conserve Earth’s life forms. Might just be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” – he tweets.
Furthermore, a day after this, he shares another tweet regarding the matter. He simplifies the matter by comparing it to something that we can get more grasp of.
“Focusing on sending biodiversity to Mars instead of conserving it on Earth is like letting your children starve as you invest in a space pod for your frozen sperm.” – he says in the latter tweet.
Even though the second tweet is not a direct reply to Elon, we can easily connect it to Elon’s latest tweets. Elon wouldn’t be what he is if his mind did not produce such ‘crazy’ ideas.
The net worth of the billionaire is well over $200 billion. He looks to spend a great amount of it to make the people multi-planetary species. The first that we know of, though. In a past tweet, he even has this picture of us populating Mars in his mind completely. He wants to build 1000 Starships that will transport humans to the red planet. Kind of in a way of a modern ‘Noah’s Ark’.
Elon wants to find a solution to a problem that will be a reality more than 500 million years from now and to build Elon’s Ark. But the conservation scientists are asking him to focus on the present. On the only planet that we have at the moment.
Dreaming big and having a futuristic mind is something to wish for. However, preserving Earth as we know it and investing in solutions that might help with the ongoing crisis seems more appropriate for now. We need something that will better life on Earth immediately. We still do not need an escaping place.
