This past Sunday fans got to see the first major PPV event from All Elite Wrestling in 2023. The main event of AEW Revolution saw MJF defend the AEW World Championship against Bryan Danielson in a sixty minute ironman match. While the match itself was an instant classic, one of the best examples of an ironman match in wrestling – it was not without it’s own shade of controversy towards the champion.
MJF Threw A Drink At A Young Fan During The Main Event
Early in the match, MJF would leave the ring and head out to the crowd – burning some time on the clock. During this stroll, he would take a drink from a mother in the crowd, and threw it’s contents at their child. While at the time the clear drink looked like water, the mother and her son were angry about this.
Will Washingston of Fightful was nearby, getting the fan an Acclaimed foam finger. Later, we’d see the fan backstage getting to meet some of his favourites in AEW – with a photo of him meeting Powerhouse Hobbs. Fans also spotted Amanda Huber sitting near the family after the incident, the wife of the late Brodie Lee and a member of the AEW community outreach team.
The Drink Contained Tequila, Tony Khan Was Unimpressed
One of the major reasons for this not being a small incident was that it was not water that MJF threw, but a mixed drink containing tequila. During the post-show media scrum, Tony Khan made it clear an incident like this would not happen again, looking unimpressed at the actions of MJF. MJF simply responded in character by saying the fan ‘looked thirsty’.
Doing something like throwing a drink at a fan is an okay way for a heel to operate, only when that fan is planted in the crowd for that moment. If that was the case, this would just a good moment of character work from MJF, but throwing an unknown drink at a young fan is a very bad look for AEW, especially with MJF positioned as their top champion.
While it’s unlikely MJF is stripped of his championship following this, a fine is likely. This is behaviour that AEW can not condone, and Tony Khan would be wise to crack down quick to avoid further incidents.
Should MJF be punished for his actions in the crowd at Revolution? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
