The IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship has had a messy 2022, and it continues here tonight. Juice Robinson has been stripped of his title due to being scheduled to miss tonight’s event, after suffering from appendicitis. So now, a triple threat becomes a straight up singles match for the vacant IWGP United States Championship.
SANADA is looking for revenge on Will Ospreay for an orbital bone injury which ended his first reign, while Ospreay is simply looking for more gold. Ospreay meanwhile is also just coming back from a Kidney Infection. The belt itself is still in the United States with Robinson, but the winner tonight is the true champion. Robinson will likely not settle for this – meaning this will not fix a messy situation.
Will Ospreay Is Appalled At The State Of NJPW
Will Ospreay would reveal his frustrations before the bell, asking where the belt is – before complaining about the state of the company. He’d rush in fast against Ospreay, before SANADA dodged and looked for a standing moonsault. SANADA landed on his feet, before sending Ospreay to the floor with a dropkick.
Vaulting body press over the top rope landed on Ospreay, before some elbows to the back of the head. Ospreay would kick SANADA away before catching the leapfrog. Hotshot would land, with a big boot following. A big elbow smash landed on SANADA, before applying a neck crank in the middle of the ring.
SANADA would fight free for some forearm smashes, before having his eye raked. Back Handspring Kick from Ospreay missed, before a basement dropkick send him to the mat. Paradise Lock from SANADA would not be successful on the first attempt, but Ospreay was caught the second time.
The dropkick would free Ospreay, who would be able to get the Back Handspring Blast Kick. SANADA went to the floor and Ospreay followed with a Corkscrew Moonsault off the top rope. Neither man was feeling good after an impact like that.
SANADA Tries His Best, But Falls To A Series Of Finishing Moves
Back in the ring, Ospreay would nail the Springboard Forearm Smash for a two count. SANADA took some Kawada Style Kicks, before absolutely blasting Ospreay to the mat with a forearm smash. OsCutter’s attempt was blocked into Skull End, but Ospreay slipped out before an enziguri. Hook Kick would land on SANADA, before the OsCutter for a two count.
Stormbreaker was blocked into a TKO attempt, with SANADA able to drop Ospreay into the cutter. Tiger Suplex got a two count, before a Muta Moonsault would see Ospreay get the knees up. Hidden Blade to the face would follow, but SANADA kicked out.
Stormbreaker was blocked into a European Clutch, getting two. Ospreay would follow up with Hidden Blade & Stormbreaker – to claim the IWGP United States Championship.
