U.S Representative Henry Cuellar (D) has said that the driver of the truck and two other participants were already arrested. It appears that the truck passed through a checkpoint on 1-35, northeast of Laredo. What is unclear to Rep. Cuellar is whether the migrants were already inside the truck when it passed Border Patrol.
From reports, the bodies were discovered outside of San Antonio on June 27, 2022. A city worker heard someone call out from inside the truck and that’s when the bodies of the dead and struggling were discovered.
Sixteen people—including four children—were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that 46 people died in the truck while four others died in the hospital. On Monday, June 27, temperatures had gotten as high as 100 degrees.
In describing the event which is the gravest migrant death to date, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg stated:
“This is a horror that surpasses anything we’ve experienced before. And it’s sadly a preventable tragedy.”
President Joe Biden responded to the tragedy by saying:
“Exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit is shameful, as is political grandstanding around tragedy, and my administration will continue to do everything possible to stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry.”
Currently, there are families from to the U.S to identify and retrieve their lost relatives.
