WWE is a company with a high level of turnover as far it goes with talent. They are constantly hiring and releasing wrestlers from contracts, especially down in the WWE Performance Center. Host to the NXT brand, many names will be signed after taking part of a tryout, which usually sees athletes invited. In the past, there was a high focus on signing established wrestlers. While this has slightly changed, WWE aren’t completely moving away from signing talented names.
WWE Scouting Names From The Indies For Next Tryouts
During the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer would publish the following update.
“While the idea is still to recruit good looking college or other athletes and train them to be wrestlers, they have contacted some indie talent for tryouts in Nashville over SummerSlam week.”
WWE never truly stopped courting indy wrestlers, a common misconception with fans. Rather, they stopped looking at older indy wrestlers, and are focused on young names. Less names like Eric Young, and more like current NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion Roxanne Perez, formerly known as Rok-C in Ring of Honor.
They want wrestlers with less damage on their bodies, ensuring that they are able to get healthy talents with longevity in the ring. Young indy wrestlers with lots of potential will always have a chance to enter WWE, regardless if WWE is scouting athletes from other sports.
The likes of Grayson Waller, Carmelo Hayes, Cameron Grimes and more in NXT 2.0 came into WWE as proven wrestlers, and have proven to be some of the best the brand has to offer time and time again. Between signing established names, helping to form the skills of talented athletes, and the occasional name from NXT UK finding their role – NXT 2.0 has a bright future, and that future will cross over to the main roster in time.
