Former ‘General Hospital’ star Steve Burton made headlines last November after being fired from his longtime role on the soap when he refused to be vaccinated for Covid-19. The actor has said very little about his departure from the show until now, offering some insight on why he opted out of getting vaccinated for the sake of keeping his job.
During an interview with ‘Deadline’, Burton expressed that while he didn’t want to leave ‘General Hospital’ the way he did, he knew that his time on the show had run out. “The circumstance was tough and you know, that’s just the way it is,” he said before diplomatically unloading how fortunate he was to have been on the show for several decades. “I’ll always be grateful for my time there. It was my family for so long. I grew up there and the fans have always been awesome to me”.
Steve Burton Finally Speaks Out On Leaving ‘General Hospital’ After Refusing Covid-19 Vaccine
Burton firmly stood by his decision to not follow the show’s vaccine mandate, even though it resulted in him getting canned. “’It was my belief and I stuck to it and I knew it was gonna be that way. I knew some people would agree with it and some people wouldn’t agree with it. ‘It’s a personal choice and that’s what I had to do.” The actor continued to project a positive outlook on the situation, saying, “I just don’t have anything bad to say. It was a handshake — “Hey, it doesn’t work for you. It doesn’t work for me.” Okay, great. Awesome. That was it. And that’s okay.”
Burton also mentioned that he chose to take the high road when it comes to dealing with his firing. “It’s how you choose to handle it. We all have a choice in how to handle things. You could get angry and pissed off and bad-mouth people and take the low road and that’s not gonna get anyone anywhere,” he said.
Steve Burton was a staple on ‘General Hospital’ from 1991 until 2012. After taking a few years away from the show, he returned in 2017 until getting axed in 2021 for opting out of getting the Covid-19 vaccine. The following months after Burton’s departure from GH seemed more like an actual soap opera than real life. He and his wife, Sheree Gustin, announced their separation after 23 years of marriage. It was also revealed that Gustin was pregnant…and that Steve Burton was not the baby’s father. The actor took to Instagram in May to make the shocking announcements. “I wanted to clear something up,” he began. “Sheree and I are separated. She recently announced that she’s expecting her fourth child. The child is not mine. We are still co-parenting our three beautiful kids. We would appreciate privacy at this time. Much luv, Steve.” As for the identity of the man who knocked up Steve Burton’s wife? It’s still a mystery, to the public at least.
