In late September 2018, Louisiana State University forward Wayde Sims was shot and killed by Dyteon Simpson following an altercation. Fast forward almost four years and Simpson was found dead in jail.

On Sunday, July 10, 2022, Dyteon Simpson was found unresponsive at around 8 PM. A medical team attempted to aid Simpson but the convicted murderer was declared dead soon after being found.
As for how he died, there were no signs of trauma to Simpson’s body from an initial investigation but what appears to be fentanyl was found via a toxicology report. A spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office stated:
“The EBR Coroner will conduct an autopsy and determine final cause of death. This investigation is ongoing as to the cause of death and possibility of contraband.”
That should spark a larger investigation into how drugs are getting into the prison and if possible, who gave Simpson the fentanyl. In the EBR Parish Prison, two inmates reportedly survived fentanyl overdoses and two others died in the past three years. So, drugs have been getting into the prison for a while now.
The 23-year-old was arrested on September 29, 2018, the day after he shot Wayde Sims. He was found guilty of second-degree murder in April 2022 and was sentenced to life earlier in July 2022.
