A Florida man—Markus Fricke—was arrested on July 18, 2022 after a tip revealed that he had homemade explosives ready to blow up himself and his neighbors.
Florida Man Arrested After Being Found with Homemade Explosives – Was Planning to Blow Up Neighbors and Himself
A woman staying with Fricke (55) contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on July 14 saying that he had been making bombs and explosive booby traps in his home located in Eustis. She said that Fricke shared his plan with her and mentioned that he was waiting on more chemicals to complete the remaining devices.
Law enforcement tends not to take a wait-and-see approach when there’s a lead on explosives in a city. Also, they had dealt with Markus Fricke before as they received various calls over the years about his behavior and had gone in for mental health evaluations.
Armed with a search warrant and the hazardous device team, the Lake County Sheriff’s sent a robot into Fricke’s home to make sure it was clear before entering.
Sure enough, the deputies found everything needed to make bombs, completed bombs, firearms, and ammo. Lt. John Herrell told FOX 35 Orlando:
“He had his house full of them, and they were all over the place. On Friday night he was threatening to kill himself and blow the house up.”
In total, five bombs were disarmed and three were almost finished. Also found in the house were 50 pounds of ammonium nitrate, anti-Semitic literature and Nazi memorabilia.
Markus Fricke was charged with making/possessing a destructive device, discharging a destructive device, and finally threatening to throw, project, place, or discharge a destructive device.
