Oof, it appears you can be hit with a pretty hefty fine if you attempt to smuggle McDonald’s onto a plane in Australia. One passenger found this out when he tried to bring two undeclared sausage and egg McMuffins onto his flight from Bali to Darwin in late July 2022.
Australian Passenger TAXED Almost $2K for Smuggled McMuffins After Contraband-Sniffing Dog Found the Undeclared McDonald’s – Ham Croissant Also Confiscated
The fines are linked to controlling diseases from entering Australia—in this case: Foot and Mouth disease. So, there’s a zero-tolerance approach to even the most seemingly benign items in your luggage. That’s what happened to this passenger as the two breakfast sandwiches were undeclared as was a ham croissant.
A contraband-detecting dog sniffed out the passenger’s meal and authorities fined the passenger $1,874. They taxed this person hard for food items that definitely didn’t go over $18.74. Looking at ticket prices for Bali to Darwin, their fine exceeded the cost of the ticket and the meal combined.
If you’re thinking about tucking that meatball sub away or “They won’t mind if I have a pudding cup. It’s a pudding cup”, think again and eat it before you board if you’re flying into Australia.
That is, unless you don’t mind getting taxed enough to buy the passengers, pilots, and flight attendants a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich.
