The Rockford PD reported that the van was taken from the Collins & Stone Funeral Home on January 21, 2023. In the back was the body of Curtis Brown, aged 47. From witnesses, it was determined that the van was heading toward Chicago.
Police officers recovered the van the following day without Brown’s body inside. His body would be found later that day in Chicago and it was transported back to Rockford. Brown, who passed away from a heart attack is scheduled to be transported back to Mississippi.
When reports of the body being found and the stolen funeral home van came out, his family didn’t know it was Curtis Brown until they were informed of the situation. “They found my baby. He was dumped in an alley butt-naked. He had on no clothes,” said Cindy Howard—Brown’s mother—told WGN.
The funeral director was fined for aiding and assisting unlicensed practice, failure to account for personal property, and unprofessional conduct. According to Howard, the funeral director hasn’t returned the family’s calls
Rockford Police named Deon Howard (23) as the thief and charged him with abuse of a corpse and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle.
