Recently, Elon Musk shared a tweet that started salty rumor spreading. He tweeted that he is for buying one of the most popular football teams, Manchester United.
You never know it with Elon. Is he joking? Is he serious? So the fans questioned him and literally overflown him with comments and questions.
Elon Musk Makes A Salty Joke About Buying Manchester United – Almost Affects The Stock Exchange Price
Hours later, realizing what he did he shared another tweet where he confessed that he was joking about the new purchase. He added that he is not planning to get into sports at all, for that matter.
He walked back on the claim the same way he walked away from the deal to obtain his favorite social media, Twitter.
It is not the first time that Elon makes such a joke, or that he tries to troll the media. He is aware that the media is closely following and analyzing his every step and every social media post.
One of his such not funny jokes is the one where he claimed that he will take Tesla private. This made the US Securities and Exchange Commission deliver some fraud charges. Since then, the billionaire’ Tesla-related tweets are to be revised by a person put in charge of that.
As he knows to share joke tweets, or troll tweets as he says, every now and then he shares some legitimate information as well. That’s what happened when he said ‘The Twitter deal cannot move forward’. He indeed backed up from the deal and started what will be one of the most high-value lawsuits in recent history.
Thankfully, his joke about obtaining Manchester United happened in hours when the US markets were closed. If that wouldn’t have been the case, the post could’ve also attracted regulatory attention. The New York Stock Exchange listings include Manchester United. This would’ve affected its price.
“When someone in his position makes comments about buying an entity, people start speculating: ‘is he joking, not joking, half-joking?’” – Hui Chen, an ethics and compliance consultant says. “His actions have a major impact on markets and he really needs to be cognizant about the potential implications.”
Manchester United’s director for media relations, Andrew Ward received numerous emails by many newsletters almost immediately after Elon’s tweet. However, due to the timing of the post, he did not immediately reply to them.
Manchester United is a football club based in the Old Trafford area of Manchester, England. The club is competing in the Premier League.
