Gunther Describes His Experiences Within WWE – “I’ve Always Been Treated With Respect”

Over the past few years within WWE, one of the most consistent performers has been Gunther. Formerly known as WALTER, he came into WWE with a lot of hype, and proceeded to dominate NXT UK for over two years as NXT UK Champion. He’s since moved to the United States, and now performs on Smackdown Live – where he recently defeated Ricochet to claim the WWE Intercontinental Championship, and has since successfully defended the belt in an instant classic against Shinsuke Nakamura. WWE has done well to present him as a star constantly, and Gunther has nothing bad to say about WWE at this point.

Gunter Feels He’s Always Been Able To Be Himself In WWE

During an interview with Witty Whittier ahead of WWE’s return to Canada, Gunther was asked about a general overview of his time within WWE. He’d respond with the following – and explained how he’s always felt like he could be himself in WWE.

“It’s been very good so far. I signed with the company in 2019 for NXT UK. I can’t complain. It’s been really good. Basically, from the person I’ve been before on the Independents, I’m still myself. I’ve always been treated with respect and always had the freedom to be myself, more or less. That’s the case still, to this day.”

Loving The Atmosphere Of Empty Arena Shows

With his time in NXT UK, half of it was spent with empty arena events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including his classic battle with Ilja Dragunov. Gunther would have the following to say about these events, and why he enjoyed them.

“I enjoyed those events in the empty arenas. During the time, I was in NXT UK, it was at least a year, maybe more. Our shows happened in an empty building. I liked the atmosphere, it was different. For the style I have, a very physical style in the ring, I think I benefited from it a lot. To be back in an arena with an audience and to have that feeling back is definitely the preferred choice. I’m glad it’s back to normal. We do a lot of live shows and I get to wrestle in front of different people in different cities and countries. I always enjoyed wrestling as a live experience compared to a TV experience. That’s when our sport is in its purest form, at a live event.”

Do you think Gunther will remain dominant as Intercontinental Champion? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
