Kate and Prince William happened to have made a visit to Malaysia in 2012. And as the country has a majority-Muslim population, her dress did upset the conservative elements in the country.
In the pictures here, we can see that Kate’s neckline is low as the cleavage is visible. This was all the more daring since it was part of the couple’s Diamond Jubilee Tour, as they visited the leader of Malaysia and his wife.
Daena Borrowman of jewellerybox had this to say: “There are dozens of protocols in place that stylists and dressers of the royals have to familiarise themselves with to prevent working royals from landing into embarrassing fashion faux pas.
“Royal women are discouraged from showing off their cleavage.” It is not exactly clear whether this was a mistake by Middleton, or if it was a deliberate decision to go ahead with a less formal style.
Regardless of what the case may have been, this did not go down very well for the following reasons. First of all, it was interpreted as a sign of disrespect to the country’s customs.
Secondly, others argued that such behaviour was not befitting for a member of the Royal family. Lastly, in any event, others simply felt Kate did not come across in a positive light.
And this was reflected in the comments that followed on social media. One person wrote: “My chihuahua has more class than Kate,” while another person stated: “#KateMiddleton has never been classy.
“You can take her from the Commoners but you can’t take the Commoner out of.” It is clear that Kate’s dress sense did not go down well, but in her defence, this was a decade ago.
