Robert Mondragon, a Florida native with an fascination with school shootings was arrested for leaving animal carcasses at a memorial. In late July 2022, school staff and a Broward County deputy found three dead animals on the bench of the Stoneman Douglas Memorial Garden.
It Started with a Case of Defacing a Memorial
The first was a dead duck which a school crossing guard discovered on July 20. They would find a raccoon corpse the following day. At the end of the month, deputy found a dead possum. Surveillance caught a white Nissan rolling up to the memorial on the night of July 30, 2022.
He was shown getting out of the car and going to the passenger side. The man was also spotted heading to the memorial before driving off. The following day—when the possum was found—a deputy spotted the white Nissan and it was subjected to a traffic stop.
It was during the stop that the deputy observed that driver—Robert Mondragon (29)—had blood and bird feathers on the passenger side floor. When asked about the scene, Mondragon told him that he likes “the metal and blood smell” that comes from a dead animal.
Obviously, that required more prodding considering they had a situation where someone in town was defacing a memorial with animal corpses.
When the Sheriff’s Office looked into Robert Mondragon more, they found out that he had—as they put it—a “disturbing fascination with mass school shootings” and was the one placing the carcasses.
Robert Mondragon Held Without Bail as a Precaution
Pictures recovered from his phone showed him holding he carcass of the duck with its chest cut open and of the raccoons in his car. The more they dug into the 29-year-old, the more disturbing his fascination became.
Mondragon researched school shootings regularly as well as inquiries into breaking into pipe bombs, breaking in, and killing police officers.
As the 2021-2022 school year closed, Mondragon would walk the same route taken by Nikolas Cruz on February 14, 2018, when the Parkland shooting took place.
Having seen enough, authorities charged Robert Mondragon with incident exposure and removing or disfiguring a tomb or monument. He had prior charges as he was also charged with violating his probation for battery
Mondragon was arrested and charged with removing or disfiguring a tomb or monument, violation of probation for battery and indecent exposure, and violation of a risk protection order, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
He remains held without bond.
