Recently, the AEW World Tag Team Championships changed hands, when The Acclaimed would defeat Swerve In Our Glory during AEW Grand Slam. This made many fans believe that we would finally see Swerve Strickland turn on Keith Lee, a storyline that has been slowly brewing since they started teaming up. However – this isn’t the next plan for this team, as they were set to launch a feud against Wardlow & Samoa Joe on the latest episode of AEW Dynamite.
Swerve Strickland Not Being In Town Pushed Back Start Date For Plans
The only reason this wasn’t set up on AEW Dynamite has to do with Hurricane Ian. This hurricane shut down travel for many AEW names, including Swerve Strickland. Keith Lee was on hand – and would confront The Acclaimed saying they will be looking for a rematch, before The Acclaimed vs. Private Party vs. Butcher & The Blade would be booked for AEW Rampage.
Dave Meltzer would publish the following about the original plans in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
“Strickland wasn’t with Keith Lee in a confrontation with The Acclaimed to build a tag team title rematch, and Hager wasn’t with the Jericho Appreciation Society. In a trivia note, it was Hager who came up with the idea of the JAS coming out in all purple suits in the celebration. There were several others not there including Samoa Joe, and the plans to start a Joe & Wardlow vs. Lee & Strickland program had to be put on hold.”
Could Lead To Big Title Matches Over TNT & ROH World Television Championships
Putting Swerve In Our Glory in alongside the TNT & ROH World Television Championship is an odd choice, but one that could work out in the end. Fans want to see Keith Lee & Swerve Stickland go after singles gold soon – and setting up more matches for Wardlow as TNT Champion is never a bad thing. It’s simply frustrating to see Wardlow not defending his belt – with his reign being a major letdown following the peak of his popularity earlier this year.
Samoa Joe has not gotten as much flack for his reign, though a long absence to shoot a ‘Twisted Metal’ show slowed his reign down heavily. Both men need to get title defenses in soon – and putting Joe vs. Swerve and Lee vs. Wardlow on will do a ton for both belts.
