A Missouri farmer has pleaded guilty to the double murder of two Wisconsin brothers over a cattle deal back in July 2019. Garland Nelson accepted two counts of first-degree murder as well as the burning and disposal of the Diemel brothers.
Nick and Justin Diemel had dealings with Garland Nelson since November 2018. The two sides had a deal where Nelson would feed and pasture the cattle on his land. Basically, he’d take care of them out-of-state. That business arrangement evolved into Nelson selling cattle for the Diemels.
Missouri Farmer Pleads Guilty to 2019 Cattle Deal Debt Murders of 2 Wisconsin Brothers
By April 2019, that deal went sour as Nelson was busy selling off and trading the Diemels’ cattle without running them their share. He would also kill off cattle without paying the brothers. On top of that, he defrauded the Diemels by sending them bills.
The brothers would make their way to Braymer, Missouri to settle a $200,000 debt with Nelson. With the walls closing in rapidly, Nelson shot the brothers and burned the remains in barrels. Investigators would later mind the Diemels’ remains in a pile of cow manure on Nelson’s property and in a livestock trailer in Nebraska.
It was a plan that didn’t take into account that Justin and Nick Diemel were running a whole cattle business in Wisconsin. Sure, Nelson could skim off the top and kill off his debtors but this plan required an exhaustive part two.
While behind bars, Nelson was sued by the Diemel family in December 2019 for wrongful death. The Diemels were awarded $2 million in a settlement.
Garland Nelson evaded the death penalty by pleading guilty. His charges include two counts of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, abandonment of a corpse, tampering with a motor vehicle, and stealing a motor vehicle, according to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office. He will serve two life sentences with no parole.
