Over the past few years, we’ve seen WWE turn Damien Priest into a star. A veteran of the independents and member of the Ring of Honor roster, he’d be signed to WWE at 36 years old. Since then, he’s become NXT North American Champion, competed at WrestleMania alongside Bad Bunny, and was the first name recruited to The Judgement Day when Edge formed the faction. However, Priest was convinced he’d never make it big in the industry due to his age.
Damien Priest Told Preston Vance He Was Never Going To Be Signed Due To His Age
During an interview with Busted Open Radio, AEW star and Dark Order member Preston Vance was asked about his quick rise in the industry. Vance would relate this back to Priest, a man who helped to train him ahead of his 2015 debut. He had the following to say about Priest and his debut.
“I think about it every day. 2015 is when I debuted, so that was seven years ago. Mark told me this, everyone in this generation lives on microwave time. They want it quick. For me, I feel like this has taken forever, to get where I’m at. Then I look at other guys like QT Marshall. He trained me, he didn’t get signed anywhere for the first 13 years of his career.
Same with Damian Priest, he trained me. I remember when I met him, he had already been wrestling for 12 years and he told me, ‘My goal is to get you signed and I have a piece of your career. I know I’m never going to be signed, I’m too old,’ and now he blew up. It’s crazy to look at stuff like that. I was very lucky to be on a little bit of a fast track.”
Priest remains in The Judgement Day, but Edge was replaced as the leader by Finn Balor. He’d face Edge during an episode of Monday Night RAW in Toronto, Ontario, Canada – and is set to be facing AJ Styles, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson at Crown Jewel. Preston Vance meanwhile is set to face RUSH tomorrow evening on AEW Rampage.
