You’ve all heard about Elon Musk’s plans to create a net of underground tunnels below California. Well, now his plans are being canceled as the started tunnel gets dismantled.
The short tunnel below California was just a test site for Elon Musk’s big picture. However, there are reports that he fled the idea and dismantled the technology. The test tunnel was just a 1-mile long underground track, wide about 12 feet, with walls wrapped with steel. Elon Musk carefully chose the location for the tunnel to be below Jack Northrop Avenue, as it is very near the SpaceX headquarters.

Nonetheless, the idea was interesting. Traveling in vehicles designed for fast transport, levitating with the help of magnetic fields. It sounds out of this world. However, it is possible. The thing is, the investment that it requires is huge. And Elon Musk comes out of a $44 billion investment on Twitter.
The entrance for the tunnel was a wide area on the Avenue. According to the reports, this space will now be turned into a parking lot.
Elon Musk had a great vision of the tunnel. He promised that when done, it would transport people at speeds as fast as 600mph. The billionaire started the project back in 2013. He was so certain that the project will be a success that he even thought through the pricing and everything. He told the public that he would put it in use with a price of $1 per trip.
The Boring Company released a statement regarding the tunnels back in April. However, they did not mention any dismantling or backing off from the project. They assured us that by the end of this year they will start the planned tests.
Nonetheless, the entrance of the test tunnel looked abandoned way before its dismantling. Ever since 2018, children were using the entrance to race their skates and pods.
After 2018, Elon Musk seems to have abandoned the idea of levitating trains traveling at 600mph. Instead, he thought of re-modeling the tunnels to make them adaptable for Tesla vehicles.
The initial plan was to build such tunnels below Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and many more cities across the US. However, it never reached fruition.
Although the idea of traveling from the West Coast of America to the East coast in a matter of an hour or two sounds bizarrely good, it seems like it won’t happen in near future.
Elon Must still didn’t give an official statement about this. However, the deed speaks for itself. We can say goodbye to the thought of traveling in hyperloop tunnels for now.
