At the Calexico Port of Entry, CBP officers discovered a massive amount of meth in two railcars in Calexico, California.
California CBP Officers Discover Almost 350 POUNDS of METH in 2 Railcars in Calexico – Estimated Street Value of Roughly $417K
The first seizure happened at 5AM on October 31 after a train coming in from Mexico rolled into the downtown port of entry. A train would seem like a daunting vehicle to inspect but since it’s cross-border transit, the CBP has an NII system—meaning x-ray imagining—in place to see what might be onboard. Also utilized was the canine unit.
In these drug smuggling cases, the tag team of x-ray imagining and a drug-sniffing dog is extremely effective. Both methods alerted Border Patrol officers to something of interest, prompting the physical search.
The first railcar contained a whopping 197 packages of meth that were hidden in the frame beam. In another railcar, 105 packages found in the same place. In all, 347.88 pounds of meth was confiscated and weighed in at an estimated $417,456 on the street.
This is a different case from others since this is a train and there could be a real chance that the company owning the train and the operators had no idea that the drugs were stowed on the train. At the same time, it wouldn’t be surprising if there was some inside assistance.
