Lance Archer To Debut Tonight On AEW Dynamite
Early last week, after a couple of months of speculation, AEW confirmed the signing of Lance Archer. To those not in the know, Archer is a big hoss at 6’8 and 265lbs who brings power and intensity to his bouts. He’s a long-time veteran of the business, having bounced from place to place since his debut back in 2000. He’s most known for lengthy stints with the company then known as TNA and later New Japan Pro Wrestling. Though he was largely seen as a man with squandered potential for quite a while, he underwent a late career renaissance last year after splitting up with long-time tag partner Davey Boy Smith Jr.
He went off on his own as a singles wrestler starting with the 2019 incarnation of the G1 Climax, surprisingly defeating the highly touted Will Ospreay in a great match on the first night, making a splash right out of the gate. Even though he went on to finish in the bottom of his block, he was seen as one of the tourney’s major success stories, having proved a lot as a singles wrestler in a very short amount of time. His performances were rewarded with a brief US title run, something of a matter of circumstance, which concluded with a Deathmatch against Jon Moxley for the gold at the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 14.
This seemingly signaled the end for his New Japan run. At 43 he’s the hottest he’s ever been and it’s now or never for him to become a major star in wrestling. The single date a week schedule has to be tempting for him at this point in his career so this signing makes plenty of sense. He’s been advertised for an in-ring debut though no opponent has been slated so it’s likely he’ll debut with an explosive squash.
