According to Matt Hancock, the former British Health Secretary, the World Health Organisation ignored his requests to label the Covid-19 epidemic an international emergency because its director was concerned about displeasing China.
WHO Director Tedros Failed To Declare Covid-19 An Emergency For Fear Of Upsetting The Chinese Leadership-‘China Runs Various Projects In His Private Office,’ Says Former British Health Secretary Matt Hancock
Hancock says that WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was kowtowing to Beijing because China provided funds for his position.
Dr Ghebreyesus allegedly twice refused Mr Hancock’s request for international action tackling the pandemic. It is said that he delayed important decisions after the first cases were discovered in Wuhan, thereby helping to protect China’s standing.
In his book, Pandemic Diaries, Hancock said: “I called the head of the World Health Organisation to try to persuade him – for the second time – to declare a public health international emergency.
“But China runs various projects in his private office, so he is scared stiff of upsetting them.” It is fair to say that the Chinese government has come under heavy scrutiny when it comes to its covid policies.
The current zero-covid policy has led to mass unrest in the country with numerous demonstrations being held. So much so that the police have had to crack down with protesters even demanding that the current leader Xi Jinping step down.
And all of this would seem to indicate that the Chinese leadership has found it hard to come up with efficient ways to ensure that society can return back to normal.
Nevertheless, the social media response towards Hancock was damning. This was on the basis that he had also broken covid guidelines himself while he was Health Secretary, as shown when his infamous affair was leaked to the media.
One person wrote: “Right, well anything starting with Mutt Meacock claims can safely be dismissed as a lie.” If there were mistakes made, then lessons have to be learnt moving forward at a time where there is mass uncertainty.
