Grimes, the woman that shares two children with Elon Musk, revealed that it is simply strange for her for someone to call her a mother. She doesn’t deny that she respects the term ‘mother’ but somehow, throughout her journey of having two kids, she grew a distaste for the term. That’s why, her son X, calls her by her first name.
Grimes has a daughter and a son with Elon Musk, both with very unusual names, X and Y. She was together with the billionaire for a couple of years before they split in March this year.

Grimes, or Claire Elise Boucher, is colorful when it comes to speaking about her parenting. She welcomed a son in 2020 and a daughter this year, and both times she revealed how strange it feels that now she is the one that needs to teach and raise children.
“I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me artistically. Being a mother feels weird for me to say.” – Grimes said in 2021.
“X says Claire, but he doesn’t say ‘mama’… like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word ‘mother’. I don’t even know why I have a distaste for it, I respect it … I just can’t identify with it, weirdly”, she told Vogue magazine.”
Grimes is also open to speaking about the idea behind her children’s names. Especially about her son’s name, X. “X, the unknown variable.” – Grimes explains. “Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).”
“A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent. A=Archangel, my favorite song.” – she listed the things connected to her children’s names.
Nevertheless, Elon Musk and Grimes have different views on pronouncing the names. “It’s just X, like the letter X. Then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I.” – Grimes responded to a fan.
However, Elon has different pronunciations in mind. “I mean it’s just X, the letter X, and the ‘Æ’ is pronounced, ‘Ash.'”
Exactly one year ago, Grimes revealed the birth of her second baby. She informed the public that it came via a surrogate mother. The story came up as a part of an interview with Vanity Fair.
She explained that the ‘Exa’ part of the name refers to the supercomputing term exaFlops, while Dark means simply ‘unknown’.
“People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.” – Grimes explained her fascination.
She told that the name is also a tribute to her favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.
Grimes opened up and told that she initially wanted to name her daughter Odysseus Musk. However, Elon Musk strongly opposed it, so they compromised.
Earlier this year, Grimes shared the news about her and Elon’s breaking up again. She explained that even though they aren’t together romantically anymore, he will remain the love of her life.
“Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article, haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now.”
