Cody Rhodes leaving All Elite Wrestling to return to WWE was one of the biggest stories in the early months of 2022. Having been one of the men to help start AEW alongside The Young Bucks & Kenny Omega, few ever expected him to leave the company – especially just a few years into the companies history. However, he’s now back under WWE contract – recovering from a torn pec, and potentially in line to wrestle Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania. His leaving AEW affected the company deeply, as Tony Khan has now revealed.
Tony Khan Talks Cody Rhodes Leaving AEW
While speaking with Fight for their Grapsody podcast, Khan would have a chance to express how losing Rhodes affected AEW as a whole. Khan would be quoted saying the following.
“It was, certainly, whenever you lose a star the caliber of Cody Rhodes, it’s going to have a major impact on your company and affect a number of different departments and number of different things in terms of the presentation and the backstage. Personally, I really like Cody and I know Cody really well and he was so involved in so many different facets with the start of AEW and what we were. When he left, that was a major challenge. Going into Revolution, we had so many great stories and I think it helped us and helped keep us strong that people were so invested in what was happening in AEW at the time.”
Rhodes left AEW as a three time TNT Champion, and returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38. This kicked off a feud with Seth Rollins, while saw Rhodes win three PPV matches – including a gruesome Hell in a Cell match, which Rhodes worked with a torn pec, which was named Match of the Year by many WWE fans. Rhodes was losing steam as a babyface in AEW, and also lost some booking ability after Khan took more charge of the creative direction of the company in 2021.
