One of the biggest matches in the early history of All Elite Wrestling came at Full Gear 2019. We would see Chris Jericho defend the AEW World Championship against Cody Rhodes in an epic match… but with a special stipulation. It would be the only chance Rhodes ever had to claim the AEW World Championship – which locked Rhodes away from the main event of AEW.
Chris Jericho Speaks About The Choice Of Cody Rhodes To Never Challenge For AEW World Championship Again
During the latest episode of the Talk Is Jericho podcast, Chris Jericho would reflect on his time as AEW World Champion – after some recent attempts to get a second reign, being unsuccessful in defeating Jon Moxley, and in the Tournament of Champions. He’d be quoted saying the following about the choice of Cody Rhodes to lock himself away from the main event scene in AEW.
“He was adamant. I’m still not too sure why he you put that rule that he can never challenge for the world title again. For whatever reason, that was completely his idea. I guess maybe he wanted people to know that he wasn’t just gonna win the title. He wanted to be the face of the company.
We’re all faces of the company but he really embraced the EVP part of it. The other guys kind of did it in the shadows, but he was doing it on camera and all that sort of thing. So I think he wanted people to understand that he wasn’t gonna take advantage of this position that he was in and he did the ‘I’ll never fight for the world title.’”
Since then, Cody Rhodes would become a three time TNT Champion in AEW, before leaving to return to WWE. His return to WWE was a smash success, and could well lead to him getting back to the World Championship, despite currently being on the injured list after wrestling Seth Rollins in a Hell in a Cell with a torn pec.
