Over the past few years, fans of Will Ospreay have watched him go from one of the best high fliers in the industry to one of the greatest all around wrestlers in the world. His transition from Junior Heavyweight to Heavyweight is second only to that of Kenny Omega. Right now, Ospreay is the leader of The United Empire faction, the holder of the IWGP United States Champion, and earlier this year was a finalist in the G1 Climax tournament – losing to Kazuchika Okada in the end. However, as his NJPW contract comes to an end – fans are wondering just what is next for The Commonwealth Kingpin.
The True Bidding War Of 2024 Could Be Over Will Ospreay
Back in 2019, Will Ospreay would sign a five year contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. This was when the only other major option to make good money in professional wrestling was WWE, as All Elite Wrestling not even on TV yet. He would choose to stick with NJPW, but the landscape in professional wrestling has changed a lot in just three years, with few being able to predict just what things will look like in 2024.
If Ospreay continues to improve at a rapid rate – we are going to see NJPW, WWE & AEW throw major money at him to try and get him under contract. While MJF rambles on about the “bidding war of 2024” in regards to his contract, Ospreay might well find himself overshadowing the current AEW World Champion come that time.
NJPW Have Been Good To Ospreay, Building His Loyalty
Ospreay has shown up in AEW a few times in 2022, defending the IWGP United States Championship against Orange Cassidy at Forbidden Door, and teaming with Aussie Open in the AEW World Trios Championship tournament. This has led to come extra interest in Ospreay as a full time talent, and Ospreay himself would say to Fightful Select that he felt “at home” during his appearances.
However, Ospreay would also say he’s “paid very well by New Japan Pro Wrestling” and that his heart is still with the company. NJPW has been very good to Ospreay, which could ensure loyalty in 2024 when the offers start flowing in. If Ospreay is to leave the company, it’s likely 2023 will be another great year – but he will be cooled off come Wrestle Kingdom 19.
If he leaves the company, it will simply leave an open slot at the top of the card to be filled. Ospreay is valuable to NJPW, but just as the likes of AJ Styles & Kenny Omega would have their spots filled – Ospreay would have someone waiting for his spot. NJPW is one of the best companies in the world at making stars, and Ospreay is just their latest success.
