Former UFC, PRIDE, and Bellator fighter Phil Baroni has been arrested on murder charges in San Pancho, Mexico. Reports state that the death occurred at the end of December 2022. News outlet Tribuna De La Bahia broke the story along with photos of Baroni speaking with police.
Former UFC and PRIDE Star Phil Baroni Charged with the Murder of His Girlfriend in Mexican Hotel Room
The 46-year-old retired fighter contacted police when he claimed that he found her unresponsive. When the police arrived, they found his deceased girlfriend nude on the bed with a sheet over her body. Her body and face were noticeably bruised. Authorities also noticed that one of Baroni’s fists was bruised and that he appeared under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
According to Baroni, he had been drinking and got into an argument with his girlfriend when he found out she’d cheated on him. Things escalated into violence after he claimed to have told her to go take a shower. When she refused, he grabbed her by the arms and threw her into the shower.
In the process, she struck her head. As for why she was on the bed nude with a sheet over her, Baroni said that she was unable to climb out of the tub and he helped her to the bed. He then claimed that she told him that she was cold and put the sheet over her. Baroni left the room after she requested he buys some cigarettes and beer.
When he returned, he figured that she had fallen asleep. However, the reported amount of bruising to the woman’s face and body and on his hand doesn’t seem to match up with someone hitting their head in the tub and dying as a result.
Phil Baroni was charged with murder and is currently behind bars at the Municipal Administrative Court in Valle de Banderas, Nayarit. The police are still investigating and awaiting the results from an autopsy.
News of Baroni’s arrest comes days after a video of UFC president Dana White drunkenly slapping his wife after he’d been slapped during New Year’s in Mexico.
