The acting performance of a Hong Kong scammer recently went viral on Twitter as a man pretended to be clipped by a passing car. Only, the car wasn’t going fast enough to do any significant harm to the guy who ran directly into it.
It’s Viral: Hong Kong Man Delivers Porcelain Scammer Award-Winning Acting Performance After Running Into Slow-Moving Car and Faking Hit
The incident occurred on New Year’s Day 2023 in Mong Kok where the driver and a passenger are filming their drive. Their car seems to be moving at a pretty slow, cruising speed.
On a turn, a man walks up and kind of throws himself on the hood. It wasn’t as if he took an action movie back bump onto the hood or windshield nor was it as if he’d been clipped by a passing car.
No, this man kind of flopped on the hood as one would on their bed or a beanbag chair. We’re talking very low impact.
However, the best part was the man staggering around as if he got walloped then falling to the ground and rolling in the street for several moments. While the dialogue was in another language, you can hear their concern turn to confusion.
In China, this is known as Pèngcí or “bumping porcelain.” It comes from the practice of getting into a position where a tourist or other mark bumps into the scammer, causing them to drop something expensive. The mark would then be extorted for money to cover the scammer’s “loss”.
This scam has been expanded into faking injury after a car accident or some other “misfortune”. Since the scammer will instantly fall and end up with some injury, they’re considered porcelain since they “break” so easily.
