Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’s Jen Shah will be spending six-and-a-half years behind bars for running a years-long telemarketing scheme that, according to prosecutors, targeted elderly and vulnerable people, taking all their savings and maxing out their credit cards. The reality star pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in July, 2021 in a shocking defense U-Turn. This morning, Shah was in court in New York City to be sent to prison. The judge said that her sentence would be over three years – what she requested – at the top of the proceedings.

Shah, 49 had the support of her her husband, their two sons, other loved ones – and her therapist. The reality show star appeared in the court in a smart, beige outfit but had ditched the designer bags and jewelry fans of the Bravo TV show know her for.

The reality show star’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, pleaded, saying she would ‘never forgive herself’ for her actions. However, prosecutors did not show mercy, as they told the court how the mom of two had once laughed at how one of her victims had called the company, crying that she was losing all her money. They  went on to read aloud a message she sent to a colleague in which she said: ‘Did you get her to stop crying?’ Federal prosecutors wanted Shah to spend 10 years in prison, while her attorneys wanted her to serve three.

At the start of the hearing, Judge Sidney Stein warned her  that the sentence would be somewhere in between ten and three. ‘I think a variance below 130 months will be appropriate. But I do not intend to sentence Ms. Shah to 36 months, either. So it will be sometime between the two,’ the judge told her. At the top of the proceedings, Stein advised the courtroom to ignore the ‘role’ the reality star plays on TV that gave her fame.

‘Jen Shah’s role on the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, which I guess is why the courtroom is so full today, is just that, a role.  ‘People should not confuse the character she plays on an entertainment show to the person before me. Alright,’ the judge said.

Priya Chaudhry, Shah’s attorney,  introduced the court to people who had ‘traveled’ to support her. She went on to mention the fact that Shah never talked to her victims, but the judge slapped her down, saying ‘She was too important to talk to the victims. She was a leader of this conspiracy. So this cuts against you, not for you.’  The attorney then tried to appeal to the judge’s sympathies, saying the reality TV star ‘grew up poor’.  ‘Jen has spent months reading the names of those she has hurt.

She has prayed for their forgiveness. But she cannot forgive herself. Jen understands she cannot undo the pain or repay them today – but today is about justice for them. Measuring the pain,’ she said.  Shah had denied any wrongdoing for months. However, in July, she dramatically changed her plea after  her former assistant, Stuart Smith pleaded guilty. Due to the case, she had to give up dozens of genuine and counterfeit designer bags as well as counterfeit jewelry.

In their sentencing motion to the court, prosecutors described Shah’s crimes. ‘For nearly a decade, the defendant was an integral leader of a wide-ranging, nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that victimized thousands of innocent people. Many of those people were elderly or vulnerable.

‘Many of those people suffered significant financial hardship and damage.  ‘At the defendant’s direction, victims were defrauded over and over again until they had nothing left.  ‘She and her co-conspirators persisted in their conduct until the victims’ bank accounts were empty, their credit cards were at their limits, and there was nothing more to take.  ‘Despite the defendant’s best efforts, she got caught. She then went on a public offensive and tried to profit off the charges by selling “Justice for Jen” merchandise.

She pled guilty at the eleventh hour, only after receiving the Government’s trial exhibits and witness statements. ‘In light of her conduct and her post-arrest behavior, her belated expressions of remorse ring hollow,’ US Attorney Damian Williams wrote.  The attorney blasted Shah for publicly claiming innocence and ‘mocking’ the case by making comments like ‘the only thing I’m guilty of is being Shah-mazing.’  The reality TV star had been facing up to 20 years per charge if  her case had gone to trial.

Also, if she gets sentenced to 10 years in prison, she may get out within 5 years.  Her attorneys has requested for a term of three years. Her lawyer wrote in a December 2022 filing, ‘We submit that such a sentence is just and fair because it takes into account Ms. Shah’s history and characteristics, the facts and circumstances of the offense, and meets that a court impose a sentence that is ‘not greater than necessary’ to achieve the goals of punishment.’

Reality TV star, Shah is accused of using different schemes to defraud her victims. One of her schemes was selling them fictitious business coaching classes, which they continued to pay for without actually atending the classes. Shah reportedly targeted victims herself by running a ‘sales floor’.
