At the Gib Lewis Prison Unit in Woodville, Texas, an inmate beat his cellmate to death on January 6, 2023. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, corrections officers found Danny Luken beaten savagely just before 3 AM.
Texas Inmate Serving 70 Years Beats Cellmate Doing a Life Sentence Plus 84 Years to Death
Luken was rushed to the Tyler County Hospital but died of his injuries shortly after his arrival. Since the attack happened in the early morning during lock down, his cellmate Jason Mark Ryder was the sole suspect.
The TDCJ said that Luken had been in prison since 1986 and was doing a life sentence with an additional 84 years for several crimes throughout Harris, Jefferson, Walker, and Anderson County. His crimes included prohibited substances in a correctional facility, aggravated assault of a correctional officer in two counties, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit sexual assault.
His roommate was imprisoned in 2002 and has 70 years before he can be released. Ryder’s charges include injury to a child in Brazoria County and murder in Walker County. There has been no word on what additional charges Ryder will face as he’s in prison for several more decades.
