Ben Wallace, the defense secretary of the United Kingdom, has criticized Prince Harry for claiming to have eliminated a high number of Taliban members while being deployed in Afghanistan.
UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace Slams Prince Harry For Boasting About Killing The Taliban
His comments were in relation to the fact that Harry had failed to uphold the honor of fellow military personnel.
Wallace, a veteran, joined other renowned veterans in voicing their opposition to the Duke of Sussex’s assertion in his book, Spare. This is understandable since reports indicated that Harry may have endangered British troops overseas.
Not only that, but other reports stressed that the Invictus Games could be subjected to terror attacks. With that being said, Wallace was not pleased.
In his comments, he said: “The armed forces is not about a tally. I frankly think boasting about tallies or talking about tallies … distorts the fact that the army is a team game.”
Those comments do hold some weight for the following reasons. First of all, it could be argued that Harry was trying to embellish his time in the army for the sake of generating more eyes on his book.
And in the process of doing so, glorify war. Secondly, the public’s reaction towards the war in Afghanistan has been largely negative, so his comments did not help the situation.
Lastly, in any event, since Harry prides himself as the founder of the Invictus Games, where injured military personnel compete, it showed the organization in a bad way due to the Duke’s comments.
The response on social media, however, differed from Wallace. This was on the basis that he represented a government that had been involved in a lot of wars too.
One person wrote: “This Conservative government over the past 13 years have been a killing machine, 1000’s of people have died because of their cruel policies.”
