Michael J. Fox is changing the perception of how Parkinson’s disease impacts individuals by focusing on the positive aspects of his life instead of solely on the neurological disorder.
Michael J. Fox Opens Up On His Struggles With Parkinson’s Disease-‘Pity Is A Benign Form Of Abuse’
Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that results in involuntary movements like trembling, stiffness, and coordination and balance difficulties.
The symptoms typically appear slowly and deteriorate as time passes. The disorder can also make it challenging to speak and walk as it advances.
During his visit to the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, Michael J. Fox was questioned about his approach to inspiring people to support his cause, which he holds dear to his heart, while promoting his documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”.
In his comments, he said: “I didn’t have a choice… This is it. I have to give everything I have, and it’s not lip service. I show up and do the best I can.
“Pity is a benign form of abuse. I can feel sorry for myself, but I don’t have time for that. There is stuff to be learned from this, so let’s do that and move on.”
The documentary by David Guggenheim covers both the successes and challenges faced by Fox in his personal and professional life, while also examining how he copes with a disease that cannot be cured despite his positive outlook.
In 1991, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29, but he did not disclose this information publicly until 1998.
Michael J. Fox has since then established a non-profit organization called the Michael J. Fox Foundation that aims to discover a remedy for Parkinson’s disease.
The foundation has initiated therapeutic projects, and serves as a support system for individuals who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
He added: “My fans have basically given me my life. I wanted to give these people who have done so much for me my time and gratitude. It was great for me to hear from all of you.
“Parkinson’s sucks, but it’s a great life, so thank you for it.” Fox has shown that he has come a long way and his story will serve as an example for others to follow. And that is something that should be commended moving forward.
