Last week, Cody Rhodes and Good Karma Wrestling chopped it up on a variety of topics and an interesting one was Dustin Rhodes’ career compared to his own.
Cody Rhodes Doesn’t Like His Career Being Pitted Against AEW Star and Coach Dustin – Believes Dustin Had a Rougher Time to Get Where He Is Now
As we know, Cody’s first run in WWE saw him go from a potential-filled second-generation wrestler to his entertaining “Dashing” era before ending with his Stardust era. While he got to work with and against his older brother Dustin—wrestling under his best-known persona of Goldust–the gimmick threw off that progression.
It also soured Cody on WWE creative prompting him to leave in 2016 and venture into the indies, a career progression that is usually taken by either superstars with a lot left in the tank who were released or aging talent who weren’t going to get picked up by a promotion of note right after their release. Now, we’re used to wrestlers coming from the indies and elsewhere to WWE. Here we had a talent who could’ve grown into an interesting superstar alongside his contemporaries who was developed in WWE starting in 2006.
However, Dustin’s journey was different but still with the benefit of having a three-time World champion as a father who was also the booker or creative wherever he went. However, Dustin Rhodes started when Dusty was still wrestling and just a presence on television. By the time Cody Rhodes began wrestling, Dusty was mainly behind the scenes and Dustin was the active Rhodes.
Cody acknowledged this and told the GKW hosts his feelings about his brother’s career:
“I think I had the benefit and luxury of I came after Dusty had moved on in the industry. I think Dustin had much harder of a battle. I was almost a novelty being so much younger–16 years younger than Dustin–Dad was 39 when he had me. I think he just had to fight something that is probably insurmountable.”
As Cody sees things, Dustin had an epic career of his own and achieved a lot despite wrestling in the American Dream’s shadow. Plus, the industry was very different when Dustin entered than when Cody entered. Hell, it was different when Dustin was the age Cody is now as the variety of options to leave WWE and thrive weren’t there in the late 2000s.
What do you think of the American Nightmare’s views on Dustin’s career? Is it a valid assessment? Also, at what point in his career did you see Dustin really looking like a main event superstar?
