When it comes to innovative names in professional wrestling, the roster of Extreme Championship Wrestling really pushed the industry to new levels. The likes of Mick Foley, Rob Van Dam, Raven, Terry Funk and Jerry Lynn are all respected for their efforts, but there’s one name who tends to get lost in the shuffle.
Sabu was one of the more iconic names of the promotion, but if fans missed his prime years – they just saw a sloppy worker. However, Foley urges fans to look into Sabu’s body of work – and give him the praise he has earned.
Mick Foley Praises Sabu, Hopes Fans Give Him His Flowers
On the latest edition of Foley Is Pod, Mick Foley would discuss Sabu – hoping fans will give him the same amount of attention as he gets for his contributions to professional wrestling. Foley had the following to say.
“Sabu is another guy I’d like to see get his accolades. It’s just a shame that when the only crime — the only thing Sabu ever did was get older.
A lot of the people who were on the bandwagon see him, you know, he hasn’t gone on to be part of people’s childhoods the way that we had the opportunity to. So the wave of popularity goes from here, then there’s a big downturn and then one day when Halloween, you realize that people are dressing up like you for Halloween. You’re no longer irrelevant. You’re now part of people’s childhoods.
Also, he didn’t have a chance to endear himself to people. I understand why he didn’t speak. He was the nephew of The Sheik, and The Sheik, I don’t think, spoke and if he did, it was rarely. It was never more than a few words. He was sticking to that character.
Sabu has not wrestled since July 2021, with injuries finally catching up to him. There is a hope he can wrestle a proper retirement match, but with over 1,500 matches to his name and his high risk style – he’s given enough to the industry. WWE is likely to place Sabu in the Hall of Fame someday, with Foley being a perfect man to induct him.
