NJPW Resurgence was set to be an important night in the career of Mercedes Mone. The wrestler formerly known to WWE fans as Sasha Banks was in a one night tournament to crown the first ever NJPW Strong Women’s Championship.

Having recently lost the IWGP Women’s Championship to Mayu Iwatani – Mone had a chance to become a champion once again. She was on track to make this happen, meeting Willow Nightingale in the finals. However, an injury would alter plans.

Mercedes Mone Suffers Foot Injury At NJPW Resurgence

Suffering a foot injury during her match with Willow, Mone would be helped to the back. She was originally planned to win the belt, but an audible was called – instead seeing Willow gain the victory and make history. There is still little information on the status of Mone at this time.

Mone had signed a new agreement with New Japan Pro Wrestling recently, with a reign as NJPW Strong Women’s Champion expected.

She was the perfect big name to establish this new championship, already being a proven draw for the company in the United States – something that they have lacked since starting NJPW Strong.

Willow Nightingale Has Chance To Prove Her Skills

Once Mone is ready to return to the ring, she will likely be the one to defeat Willow to take the championship. Willow will have time to prove she can impress as a top champion, which could help her booking in All Elite Wrestling & Ring of Honor, where she generally appears.

While she’s not as big of a name as Mone is, few will deny that she’s not on the path to match the level of in-ring skills that made Mone a major name.

This situation could be what finally pushes Willow to the next level, and having another match with Mone would only help her star to rise.

We here at TheOvertimer wish Mercedes Mone a speedy recovery. What is your favorite Mercedes Mone match? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
