2023 is pride month – and all across the world, it’s a time for celebration for the LGBTQA+ community. There has been major progress made in professional wrestling, with it no longer being major news if a certain wrestler comes out of the closet.
One openly gay wrestler who has had major success in All Elite Wrestling is Anthony Bowens, one half of The Acclaimed. As a former AEW World Tag Team Champion, and potentially soon an AEW World Trios Champion – he has found great success. Bowens hopes for more success from LGBTQA+ stars – feeling companies can work towards better representation for talent.
Anthony Bowens Feels Professional Wrestling Companies Can Do Better
While speaking with Nerds & Beyond writer Haley – Bowens would be asked about how LGBTQA+ stars are portrayed in professional wrestling, and how things are going in the right direction – but there is progress yet to be made.
“I think companies should be working towards better. For me, I’d want to present it the right way, considering how things were presented in the past which was presented terribly. So I’m actively trying to figure out what would be a good story to tell; what would be the right way to go. Because, again, if we are going to do it the right way, we’ve got to make sure that we are doing it the right way. It will be under a microscope because people want to see how this goes, how it plays out, how the story’s written. So there’s a delicacy to it too. It hasn’t really been done correctly before. So that’s something that I would like to probably do in the future.”
What Pride Means To Bowens
When asked what pride means to him, Bowens had the following to say.
“Pride means just being authentically you and embracing it and loving yourself. You know, a lot of times when you’re struggling with yourself or you’re in the closet, or you’re trying to present yourself to the world and you’re scared, your self-confidence drops and yourself image drops. It means breaking and shaking that completely — accepting yourself, loving yourself, and not letting all of that negative energy consume you. It’s about celebrating who you are as an individual.”
Right now, The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn are targetting AEW World Trios Champions House of Black. They were unsuccessful at Double Or Nothing, but intend to try again.
Their end goal is to give Gunn one last championship in his legendary career. Will Anthony Bowens hold gold again soon in AEW? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
