Since 2020, Roman Reigns has been firmly at the top of WWE. He became WWE Universal Champion at Summerslam 2020, and just retained that same belt at Summerslam 2023.
While most on the WWE roster have stayed quiet about their frustrations, that is not the case with Sheamus. The former WWE Champion has basically done it all in WWE, and despite being loyal to the company – isn’t scared to hold his tongue during interviews.
Sheamus Bemoans Roman Reigns Wrestling A Limited Schedule
During an interview with DailyMail about the potential of a UK based WrestleMania – Roman Reigns would be brought up. Early in Reigns singles run, he was placed against the League Of Nations faction, containing Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Rusev & Alberto Del Rio – with Sheamus getting a run as WWE Champion by cashing in Money in the Bank on Reigns.
This faction had the purpose of raising Reigns up the card, which finally came true in 2020 when Reigns became a superstar.
When this history was brought up, Sheamus had the following to say about Reigns superstar status.
“Yeah, I mean he has a luxury of wrestling five times a year. You know what I mean? That makes a big star… let’s be honest, before he went away with Covid, people didn’t give a s**t about him. He was the big babyface who was wrestling Goldberg and nobody really cared.”
The Rest Of The Roster Needs Story Time, Not Just The Bloodline
Sheamus would continue by saying that Reigns & his Bloodline faction get more storyline time, also helping his ‘superstar status’ in WWE.
“The rest of the roster needs story time too. With MSG a couple of weeks ago, they went 20 minutes over. So me and Theory had two segs which ended up turning into three small segs on the floor, you know, so that’s tough as well to go out and do that.
It’s definitely benefited him a lot and Heyman and the story they have to tell, all within that family and stuff, but as I said there’s plenty of other people on the roster that could do with story time as well. I’m not taking anything away from him, I’m just saying.”
A Look Behind The Scenes At A Changing Locker Room
This is a look at what is potentially the true feelings of the WWE roster in regards to Reigns. While he was considered a locker room leader when he was a full time wrestler, and was well liked by the roster – it’s hard to be a locker room leader when you’re a part time wrestler. Much like Brock Lesnar throughout the 2010’s, Reigns has a part time schedule.
Reigns has wrestled 9 matches in 2023, while Sheamus for comparison has wrestled 46 matches. The difference is clear, and shows just how often Reigns is around at this stage.
Many in the locker room does still have lingering good feelings about Reigns, having spent time with him as a full time wrestler – but that will fade in time.
It’s unlikely Sheamus will be the last to show their frustrations surrounding Reigns. He’s just someone with enough status in WWE to not face consequences for speaking out in this way.
