WWE Money In The Bank 2020 is soon at hand folks. We’ve got what promises to be an extremely weird show coming up this evening. Braun Strowman defends the WWE Universal Championship against his old leader Bray Wyatt here tonight. Here at the Overtimer you can bet you’ll get the same in-depth coverage as always for the show this evening. That means a live recap and results of the show as they come, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap.

WWE Universal Championship: Braun Strowman (c) vs. Bray Wyatt

When Braun Strowman took the Universal Championship from Bill Goldberg in one of the more forgettable WrestleMania world title matches that I can recall, it felt remarkably out of nowhere. Braun was clearly a guy that, in spite of his size, charisma, popularity and even the in-ring ability he had for someone with that monster frame, was never really meant to be a world champion. He’s more a freakshow attraction than a face of a company, atleast the way WWE looks at these things. I mean the fact that they had him strive for months and build up a big angle about how he was gonna finally be a singles champion for the first time by winning the Intercontinental Championship, to me, sent a clear message about his position. If he was SUPPOSED to be world champ anytime soon, surely they’d have saved that story.

But the situation was what it was and it seemed like they needed to take the title off of Goldberg. My assumption is that it was set to be his last match and he wasn’t gonna budge on it, so they did what they had to do. Braun is the benefactor of having no other better substitute after Roman Reigns had to pull out of WrestleMania. But even in the weeks since then he hasn’t exactly been featured the same way a world champion would be, it still doesn’t exactly feel like he’s in that spot for real.

Sure, they mostly just book him sparingly because they don’t want him to wear out his welcome, they don’t generally have monsters all over the show in the way regular main eventers are. But still, they did the same with the Fiend and it still felt like he owned the show in his own way. All evidence here points to a placeholder reign. And since the Fiend held the title a couple of months ago and is coming off seemingly stealth retiring John Cena, it seems extremely likely that we’ll see him take the title right back sooner than later.

However, they threw a bit of a monkey wrench in this when they decided to put Bray Wyatt in this match rather than the Fiend. That seems sorta inexplicable to me, but I imagine it’s going to mean that Braun will atleast get one successful defense out of this before the Fiend shows up. Braun over, that being the case. I genuinely would not have predicted that if they listed him as the Fiend here.

I’m a hardcore wrestling fan, by which I mean I’m a hardcore fan of wrestling... but I also have nothing against hardcore wrestling! I’ve been watching since 2006, back when I was 12 years old. In that time I’ve fervently followed WWE, TNA, ROH, Lucha Underground and others. Today I’m most passionate about NXT, New Japan and especially AEW! You could call me a modern wrestling savant but I know my old school stuff as well... I’ll be your huckleberry all night long.
