Billy Corgan Fights Rumors Of NWA's Closure

Things are not looking ideal for the National Wrestling Alliance. They were enjoying a nice resurgence with the launch of NWA Powerrr, a weekly studio wrestling program airing on YouTube & Facebook every Tuesday. With names like Nick Aldis, James Storm, Eli Drake, Melina, Rock n’ Roll Express, Aron Stevens and more? They had a solid roster, capable of both entertaining segments and strong matches. Prior to COVID-19 shutting down, they were ready to bring us the 2020 Crockett Cup, and an NWA World Championship match between Nick Aldis & Marty Scurll. Now, they’ve released most of their talent, with their TV Champion Zicky Dice leaving, Ricky Starks being with AEW now, and Melina likely out, things weren’t looking good.

Raven Drums Up Drama About NWA’s Closure

Former ECW Champion Raven is good friends with Billy Corgan, and he was seeing the writing on the wall. Between not getting a TV deal, and the messy departure of co-owner Dave Lagana, things were looking bleak. While speaking with Devon Nicholson on Hannibal TV, Raven would say the following. “I think Billy’s shutting it down, from what I hear. From the grapevine, I heard that Billy’s not opening it back up, he’s really disillusioned.”

Having previously worked with Corgan in Resistance Pro Wrestling, there is a working relationship there alongside their personal one, but Corgan would shut down this speculation.

Billy Corgan Isn’t Shutting It Down

In the wake of these rumors, Corgan would take to social media to shut them down.

“A quick note about the National Wrestling Alliance, which I fought for, and won ownership of a few years back. We are NOT shutting down. So please disregard any and all rumors to effect. The NWA is not and will not be for sale, and those talents who are under contract remain under contract for a reason: which is that we at the NWA are trying to figure out a way to provide our great fans with wrestling content in a very, very tough environment. And, most importantly, keep our talent safe and the standard of production you’ve come to expect from us at a high level. Anything less, in my opinion, is unacceptable. So yes, appreciate the interest, appreciate the chatter, but don’t appreciate the unsourced rumors and speculation.”

It’s a rough time for the company, but they are looking to come back better than ever. The NWA was hitting its stride again, and will hopefully come back stronger than ever. Do you think the NWA will survive? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
