The marquee match of G1 Climax 30 Night 7 saw a return match from G1 Climax 29 and the February 20, 2020 New Japan Road event that saw Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member Shingo Takagi make a successful V1 defense of the NEVER Openweight Championship during his only reign to date.
His opponent, CHAOS member Tomohiro Ishii came out on the losing end of both matches and began his G1 Climax 30 campaign with a painful 0-3 record. His last match saw him lose to former IWGP Intercontinental Champion and G1 Climax 29 winner, Kota Ibushi during G1 Climax 30 Night 5.
Shingo secured a hard-fought victory over current Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay on G1 Climax 30 Night 5.
As expected Ishii and Shingo battered on another, challenging the fighting spirit of one another in a match that resembled NEVER Openweight Championship matches fans have gained a flavor for since the belt took on a ‘Fighting Spirit’ identity.
As customary Ishii, he refused to back down, knowing his tournament chances were hanging in the balance, while Shingo wanted to bring his record to 2-2. However, Shingo took his fair share of offense during the match in an extremely physical affair.
Ishii would gain the fall over Shingo with his Sheer Drop Brainbuster technique at the 26 minutes and 1-second mark, giving him his first victory of the tournament.
The loss means Shingo is now in a difficult predicament as he will need to go on a winning streak to give himself any chance of winning the A Block.
While the victory helps Ishii, he too remains in a difficult situation if he wants to have any chance of advancing to the finals. Either way, both wrestlers will give their opponents a physical match that they won’t soon forget.
