Katie Taylor was the standout name on the card, and the Irish superstar didn’t disappoint on a landmark night for the sport.
Boxing News: Katie Taylor Too Classy
Katie Taylor went into her fight with Miriam Gutierrez as the heavy favourite to continue her excellent unbeaten run, and that proved to be correct. The Irish icon was classy throughout her bout with her Spanish opponent, as she remained the undisputed lightweight champion. Taylor showed her dominance from the first bell, as she immediately looked for the early knockout within the opening seconds.
However, Gutierrez showed her steel throughout the fight, as she refused to give Taylor to stoppage win that she craved. The Spanish fighter was floored in the fourth round of the fight, but managed to stay in the contest until the bell. For large parts it looked as though Taylor was going to get the stoppage, but Gutierrez never gave in.
Taylor never looked like losing the fight, and was awarded the unanimous decision victory at the final bell. Promoter Eddie Hearn spoke glowingly of the world champion at the end of the fight, as he claimed that Taylor has made the women’s division what it is today, and that she is ready for her next challenge.
Boxing News: Terence Crawford Stops Kell Brook
Terence Crawford furthered his reputation as the pound-for-pound best in the world of boxing, as he brutally knocked out Kell Brook in his defence of the WBO welterweight title. The fight was taking place in Las Vegas, and the fight changed after a right hook from Crawford left Brook leaning on the ropes. Crawford showed his brutal finish from that point with a number of hard punches.
The referee correctly called an end to the contest at that point, which could signal the end to Brook’s title challenge. The British challenger was full of praise for his opponent at the final bell, as he claimed that he never saw the shot coming. Crawford’s legacy continues, as he has now won his last eight by TKO/KO.
