On November 25th New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented Best of the Super Juniors (BOSJ 27) from the Tokki Messe in Niigata, Japan in front of 887 fans. COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) safety restrictions were responsible for the reduced crowd size, but the crowd was noticeable throughout the event.
The second series match of the event saw “Way to the Grand Master” Master Wato take on Suzuki-Gun member Douki. On July 11th at the New Japan Cup 2020 Finals, Wato defeated Douki in his return match from an excursion in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL).
Douki’s calling of NJPW Noge Dojo Young Lions “Hipster Lucha’s” for showing up on day one and competing at Arena Mexico (historical CMLL owned venue in Mexico City, Mexico) fuels the rivalry between the two, and the formers bitterness to the returning Wato.
Wato was accompanied by his mentor former four-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroyoshi Tenzan. Douki continued to show his growth as he wrestled an extremely competitive match, keeping Wato on his back foot through lengthy portions of the contest.
However, Wato showed that his ceiling is a multi-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion as he battled back to put himself in a position to win the match. He was able to gain the fall at the 12 minutes and 29 seconds mark with the RPP technique.
The victory moved Wato to (4-1) [8 points] while Douki fell to (0-5) [0 points). While Douki remained winless, his form has been impressive, as he’s been on the cusp of beating each of his opponents thus far.
Wato would go on to face CHAOS member “High Voltage” Sho on November 25th, while Douki would face fellow Suzuki-Gun member El Desperado on the same night.
Wato’s victory cemented him as the dark horse of BOSJ 27, as he makes a strong run towards a finals appearance and his first NJPW trophy.
