The career of Lio Rush has been an incredibly interesting one to follow in recent years. He went from thrilling fans in shows for Pro Wrestling Guerilla (PWG), Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) and Ring Of Honor (ROH) before signing with WWE. Quickly he was able to make a name for himself, by making a poorly timed joke about the release of Emma and getting the roster at his throat.
Despite this, he’d go on to manage Bobby Lashley, compete for the Intercontinental Championship, and even win the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. He’d eventually be released, retire from professional wrestling to focus on his rap career, and then return to the ring soon after. His latest debut was for New Japan Pro Wrestling, which could be his new home in the industry.
Lio Rush Teases Leaving The U.S Independents
Taking to Twitter a few weeks after his NJPW debut in the 2020 Super J-Cup, Rush would say the following. “My time on the U.S independents are slowly dwindling.” This can only mean one thing, that Lio Rush is about to sign a contract with a major company that doesn’t allow their talent to work outside shows. That really doesn’t do much to narrow things down, given the pandemic making that risky.
AEW, WWE, and Impact Wrestling all don’t allow this, but AEW & Impact are only temporary on that stance. There is very little chance of Rush going back to WWE anytime soon, as despite having success, he was constantly butting heads with management. Impact Wrestling could be likely, as there he could even become World Champion. AEW is a bit bloated at the moment, and might have enough young projects right now.
Perfect For NJPW
However, him having put on a stellar match with El Phantasmo in the Super J-Cup might have been enough to impress the right people. Rush has a perfect style to rule the lacking Junior Heavyweight Division in NJPW, one that is always losing talent as they move up to the Heavyweight ranks. It would be hard to make a debut over in Japan due to a current state of emergency, but he only said his time is ‘slowly dwindling’ and not done. He could hopefully be there for a tour like Best of The Super Juniors in the spring.
Regardless of what company signs Lio Rush, it’s going to be great to see him on a consistent basis once again. It can’t be overstated how good Rush is, and he’d be an asset anywhere he lands. Where do you hope to see Lio Rush in 2021? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
