It has been a long wait for Carl Frampton, but he has finally seen his world title shot for the WBO junior lightweight title officially announced. In the official announcement, it was revealed that Frampton vs Jamel Herring would be taking place in London.

The announced fight is set to take place in February, which comes just days after it was announced by the British Boxing Board of Control that boxing events in the United Kingdom would resume next month. It was announced a few weeks ago that all scheduled bouts for this month would be cancelled after a sharp rise in positive COVID-19 tests.

    Frampton Looking For History

Frampton’s career has been gripped with massive historical significance. He became the first fighter from Northern Ireland to win world titles in two different weight classifications, and will be looking to go one better in February by winning a three different title. The Northern Irishman held the IBF super bantamweight and WBA featherweight titles for a year between 2016 and 2017, before adding the WBO featherweight title to his collection in 2018.

Frampton hasn’t fought since August last year, where he beat Darren Traynor by TKO in the seventh round. That was his second victory on the bounce after being beaten by Josh Warrington by unanimous decision in December 2018. History beckons once again for Frampton, but he will be coming up against a tough challenge in the form of Herring at the end of February.

    Herring Looking To Continue Record

Herring will present a massive challenge for Frampton, as the American has dominated since winning the WBO junior lightweight title two years ago. He is ranked by The Ring as the fourth best junior lightweight in the world, and has won 22 of his 24 professional fights. The American won the WBO junior lightweight title back in May 2019 with a unanimous decision victory against Japanese fighter Masayuki Ito.

Since that victory, he has successfully reclaimed the title on two separate occasions. The first successful title defence came against Lamont Roach Jr, who he beat by decision. However, there was an air of controversy in his last fight against Jonathan Oquendo, as he successfully defended his title after the challenger was disqualified from the bout after repeatedly head-butting the American champion. This could arguably be the biggest fight of both their careers, and it should be an entertaining bout.
