Since becoming the Smackdown Tag Team Champions, Bobby Roode & Dolph Ziggler have really elevated their game. Roode is one of the best tag team wrestlers around, and Ziggler has proven to be his latest great partner. Tonight they get their first PPV title defense, and have a chance to stop history. They take on the father-son duo of Rey & Dominik Mysterio who look to be the first of their kind to hold tag team gold in WWE. However an attack from Roode & Ziggler during the pre-show on Dominik definitely gave the champions an edge on this show.
Rey Mysterio Would Try To Do This Alone
This match would be changed due to this injury, and Mysterio had minimal time to find a new partner or run this one solo. As he hit the ring, he was alone, and while Mysterio is a great underdog? This is hard odds for anyone.
Mysterio went right after Roode & Ziggler as the bell rang, and got a roll up on Roode for a two count. He’d keep Ziggler down with a baseball slide, before sliding through the legs of Roode to get a splash on Ziggler. Roode would get a clubbing blow to the back on the floor, and take advantage briefly.
Mysterio shoved Roode into the steel steps and hit the seated senton off the apron. Back in the ring, a roll up got a two count before Roode nailed a huge lariat. Ziggler tagged in, and mocked Mysterio’s lack of a partner before raking his eyes with the forearm. Roode tagged in and threw Mysterio hard into the corner before mocking him as well.
Mysterio got a drop toehold into the corner, before taking out Ziggler on the arpon. Ziggler would get back up and cut Mysterio off in the corner, who’d be hung by his knee. On the outside, Ziggler would DDT the hurt leg, before sending him in the ring for Roode to beat him down.
Dominik Finally Finds His Way To The Ring
Mysterio could barely stand, but wanted to keep fighting. A double team Fame Asser would get the champs a two count, Ziggler amazed he’s still fighting. Roode slid Mysterio out of the ring, and right into a superkick from Ziggler. Mysterio broke the count at nine, but there wasn’t much left in the tank.
He’d counter a double suplex into a DDT to both men. Roode was thrown into the post, and Ziggler followed on the other side of the ring. Mysterio had a moment to breath, as Dominik stumbled to the ring and finally joined this match. He’d want the tag, as Rey hit a hurricanrana to set up the 619. Roode stopped him, and Ziggler hit the Zig-Zag for the two count.
Roode hit a massive gutbuster on Rey for a two count, and Dominik was eager for a tag. Rey was taken up high for a Dean Malenko style super gutbuster, but Rey countered and hit a bulldog off the top rope. Dominik would tag himself in, and take a huge spinebuster for this trouble. A double team neckbreaker from the champions got a two count, before Dominik was thrown shoulder first into the corner.
Roode would yell that Dominik doesn’t belong here, before Dominik countered a superkick from Ziggler with a dropkick. Both men got tags, and Rey hit a senton off the top rope, before running into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a two count. Rey set up and nailed a 619 before taking Ziggler out on the outside. Dominik hit the frog splash, and this one was over!
Turns out the way to get a good match from Dominik Mysterio is to not have him there for the bulk of the action. We got a great babyface performance from Rey Mysterio, with Dominik only coming into play at the very end. Ziggler & Roode showed why they were a great tag team here, Roode especially showing off his skills. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)
