There has been a lot of shuffling around in WWE over the past month. Talent and staff are being let go right and left, and new names added to the mix. This has been very clear with the announce teams. Adnan Virk was added to Monday Night RAW, and then let go and replaced by Jimmy Smith. Meanwhile on Smackdown Live, Pat McAfee was a seemingly perfect fit and hasn’t been moved yet. One name was lost in the shuffle during all this, and that was Tom Phillips. We know why now, as according to Fightful.com Phillips has been released from WWE.
Tom Phillips Spent Nearly A Decade With WWE
Having been with the company since 2012, Phillips got his start working with WWE doing interviews for the WWE App, which would be done during Monday Night RAW. Since then, he’s done work on just about every show, having been front and center on Monday Night RAW, Smackdown Live, NXT, and even the now defunct Superstars. Lately, he’s been relegated to 205 Live after being replaced on RAW by Virk.
Often considered to be one of their best commentators, this news comes as a major shock to many WWE fans. His time in NXT alongside Corey Graves is perhaps the best stretch of commentary WWE had, even after Byron Saxton was added in. Phillips will likely be highly sought after as a play-by-play commentator, and would be a perfect fit for anywhere from AEW to Impact Wrestling and beyond.
It’s unclear why Phillips was cut, but it might have been as simple as WWE shuffling around pieces and not seeing a use for another play by play commentator. We will have to wait and see who takes over his role on 205 Live, and due to the taped nature of that show, Phillips will likely be on the call for the upcoming Friday episode.
