Colby Covington criticized Leon Edwards following his fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 263. According to ‘Chaos,’ the Brit confirmed that he definitely doesn’t matter in the division.
Edwards won the fight via unanimous decision over Diaz. However, the Jamaican-born needed to survive a frantic fifth round after being connected by Nate late in the round. Leon had to dig deep to keep from falling to an opponent he had controlled from the start of the fight. With the win, Edwards extended his unbeaten streak to 10 fights.
Colby Covington criticizes Leon Edwards’ performance and previous inactivity
Edwards’ desire is to fight for the title in his next octagon outing. But, UFC president Dana White has already said that Colby Covington is next. In an interview for MMA Fighting, Colby cited the Edwards vs. Diaz fight, and suggests that Leon should have been more active in the last two years.
“The fight definitely didn’t matter to the division. They put a lightweight on him, the kid from Stockton, Nate Diaz. I don’t know if he’s ever won a fight at welterweight, and if he has, he definitely has a losing record. I don’t know when was the last time he won a fight overall, five years ago?”
Contrary to what has been said regarding Edwards’ bad luck and the fight falling several times to Khamzat Chimaev, Colby believes the Brit has made things difficult for himself by refusing to take fights.
“There were people fighting all through the pandemic during COVID, and he didn’t want to fight. He was turning down every single fight that was offered to him. Meanwhile, everyone in Europe is flying and fighting during COVID. Only he is sitting on the sidelines, trying to wait and pick his fights. He did it to himself. UFC knows he turned down a lot of fights and wasn’t ready to fight. I was ready.”
Do you think Colby Covington deserves the next title shot against Kamaru Usman or do you think Leon Edwards should overtake him in the rankings?
